LIFE PROCESS OUTSOURCING ?- ?LPO

By?

VIKRAM KARVE?

A few days ago I met a friend and his better half on loafing on Main Street (MG Road) in Pune. We are really enjoying life, he said, do you know how - well we have outsourced everything, yes, each and every thing - all household activities, parenting and even pet parenting. So ?you have done LIFE PROCESS OUTSOURCING, I said, tongue in cheek. Absolutely, you've said it, Life Process Outsourcing, that is the key to happiness, they exclaimed. As I said Bye and walked on Main Street, I suddenly remembered a story I had written a few years on the subject of outsourcing, when i was trying to fathom as to what the term outsourcing really meant.?

So here is the story for you to read, my take on outsourcing. Dear Reader,?please remember that this is fiction, and do tell me if you liked the story.??I look forward to your comments and feedback.

LIFE PROCESS OUTSOURCING (LPO)

One leisurely morning, while I am loafing on Main Street in Pune, I meet an old friend of mine.?? ??

?

?Hi!? I say.??

?

?Hi,? he says, ?where to???? ?

?

?Aimless loitering,? I say, ?And you?? ?

??

?I?m going to work.??? ?

?

?Work? This early? I thought your shift starts in the evening, or late at night. You work at a call center don?t you??? ?

?

?Not now. I quit. I?m on my own now.??? ?

?

?On your own? What do you do???? ?

?

?LPO.??? ?

?

?LPO? What?s that??? ?

?

?Life Process Outsourcing.??? ?

?

?Life Process Outsourcing? Never heard of it!?? ?

?

?You?ve heard of Business Process Outsourcing haven?t you??? ?

?

?BPO? Outsourcing non-core business activities and functions?? ?

?

?Precisely. LPO is similar to BPO. There it?s Business Processes that are outsourced, here it?s Life Processes.??? ?

?

?Life Processes? Outsourced??? ?

?

?Why don?t you come along with me? I?ll show you.? ?

?

Soon we are in his office. It looks like a mini call center.? ?

?

A young attractive girl welcomes us. ?Meet Rita, my Manager,? my friend says, and introduces us.???

?

Rita looks distraught, and says to my friend, ?I?m not feeling well. Must be viral fever.? ?

???

?No problem. My friend here will stand in.??? ?

?

?What? I don?t have a clue about all this LPO thing...!? I protest.?? ?

?

?There?s nothing like learning on the job! Rita will show you.??? ?

?

?It?s simple,? Rita says, in a hurry. ?See the console. You just press the appropriate switch and route the call to the appropriate person or agency.?

And with these words Rita disappears. It?s the shortest induction training I have ever had in my life.?? ?

?

And so I plunge into the world of Life Process Outsourcing; or LPO as they call it.? ?

?

It?s all very simple.

Everyone is busy. Working people don?t seem to have time these days, but they have lots of money; especially those double income couples, IT nerds, MBA hot shots, finance wizards; just about everybody running desperately in the modern rat race.

So what do they do? Simple. They 'outsource'...!

?Non-core Life Activities?, for which?you neither have the inclination or the time ? you just outsource them; so you can maximize your work-time to rake in the money and make a fast climb up the ladder of success.

A ring, a flash on the console infront of me and I take my first LPO call.? ?

?

?My daughter?s puked in her school. They want someone to pick her up and take her home. I?m busy in a shoot and just can?t leave,? a creative ad agency type with a husky voice says.?? ?

?

?Why don?t you tell your husband?? I suggest. ?

?

?Are you crazy or something? I?m a single mother.??? ?

?

?Sorry ma?am. I didn?t know. My sympathies and condolences.??? ?

?

?Condolences? Who?s this? Is this LPO??? ?

?

?Yes ma?am,? I say, press the button marked ?children? and transfer the call, hoping I have made the right choice. Maybe I should have pressed ?doctor?.?? ?

?

Nothing happens for the next few moments. I breathe a sigh of relief.?? ?

?

A yuppie wants his grandmother to be taken to a movie. I press the ?movies? button. ?Movies? transfers the call back, ?Hey, this is for movie tickets; try ?escort services?. He wants the old hag escorted to the movies.??? ?

?

?Escort Services? are in high demand. These guys and girls, slogging in their offices minting money, want escort services for their kith and kin for various non-core family processes like shopping, movies, eating out, sight seeing, marriages, funerals, all types of functions; even going to art galleries, book fairs, exhibitions, zoos, museums or even a walk in the nearby garden.?? ?

?

A father wants someone to read bedtime stories to his small son while he works late. A busy couple wants proxy stand-in ?parents? at the school PTA meeting. An investment banker rings up from Singapore...he wants his mother to be taken to pray, to do an elaborate pooja, in a temple at a certain time on a specific day.

?

Someone wants his kids to be taken for a swim, brunch, a play and browsing books and music.?? ?

?

A sweet-voiced?IT project manager wants someone to motivate and pep-talk her husband, who?s been recently sacked, and is cribbing away at home demoralized. He desperately needs someone to talk to, unburden himself, but the wife is busy ? she neither has the time nor the inclination to take a few days off to boost the morale of her depressed husband when there are deadlines to be met at work and so much is at stake.? ?

?

The things they want outsourced range from the mundane to the bizarre; life processes that one earlier enjoyed and took pride in doing or did as one?s sacred duty are considered ?non-core life activities? now-a-days by these highfalutin people.?? ?

?

At the end of the day I feel illuminated on this novel concept of Life Process Outsourcing, and I am about to leave, when suddenly a call comes in.?? ?

?

?LPO?? a man asks softly.?? ?

?

?Yes, this is LPO. May I help you?? I say.? ?

?

?I?m speaking from Frankfurt Airport. I really don?t know if I can ask this?? he says nervously.?? ?

?

?Please go ahead and feel free to ask anything you desire, Sir. We do everything.??? ?

?

?Everything???? ?

?

?Yes, Sir. Anything and everything...!? I say.?? ?

???

?I don?t know how to say this. This is the first time I?m asking. You see, I am working 24/7 on an important project for the last few months. I?m globetrotting abroad and can?t make it there. Can you please arrange for someone suitable to take my wife out to the New Year?s Eve Dance...???? ?

?

I am taken aback but quickly recover, ?Yes, Sir.??? ?

?

?Please send someone really good, an excellent dancer, and make sure she enjoys and has a good time. She loves dancing and I just haven?t had the time.??? ?

?

?Of course, Sir.??? ?

?

?And I told you ? I?ve been away abroad for quite some time now and?I have?got to stay out here till I complete the project.??? ?

?

?I know. Work takes top priority.??? ?

???

?My wife. She?s been lonely. She desperately needs some love. Do you have someone with a loving and caring nature who can give her some love? I just don?t have the time. You understand what I?m saying, don?t you???? ?

?

I let the words sink in. The guy wants to outsource the?love process. This is one call I am not going to transfer. This??process??is something I am going to take on myself - yes, I am going to?in-source?this love process to myself.?

?

?Please give me the details, Sir,? I say softly into the mike.?? ?

?

As I walk towards my destination with a spring in my step, I feel truly enlightened.???

?

Till this moment, I never knew that??love??was a??non-core????life-process???worthy of outsourcing.

?

Long Live?LPO...!

LPO. Is it?Life Process Outsourcing...! Or is it?Love Process Outsourcing...!

Call it what you like, but I am sure you've got the?essence of the concept of outsourcing.

Top 7 challenges: Microsoft Surface tablet vs. iPad - Discount laptop ...

Wednesday 20 june 2012 3 20 /06 /Jun /2012 19:03

If Microsoft is going to take on Apple in the tablet wars, here are the key questions that need to be ironed out.

Microsoft came out with all guns blazing yesterday with its Surface tablets. Or did it?

The perceived success or failure of what was shown is obviously subjective, and comes down to whether you believe in what Microsoft is showing. Moreover, can Microsoft's strategy with the Surface ? and all Windows 8 tablets, for that matter ? succeed in not just being second to the iPad, but in being a true iPad rival?

As a user of both the iPad and previous Windows tablets, I think it comes down to seven key points.

Keyboard/touch pad productivity

The Surface event spent a large amount of time on the Touch Cover and Type Cover, innovative Smart Cover-like accessories that have a soft or physical keyboard, and, in the case of the Type Cover, a touch pad bonded to one side.

The iPad can support a wide variety of Bluetooth keyboards and cases like the similar Ultrathin Keyboard Cover, but no touch pad or mouse. That hampers the iPad's utility as a true laptop replacement, but would Microsoft's product make for a vastly improved experience? There's a big difference between a good keyboard and touch pad and a bad one; many netbooks weren't great productivity tools for the same reason.

Apps

Apple's App Store gives access to every iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad app, a catalogue that leads the tablet pack. The iPad has also spawned a number of iPad-optimised websites and web apps that work via Safari. Microsoft's tablets take two tacks: the Windows RT versions only run Metro apps, while the Windows 8 tablets run older Windows applications, as well. The Surface RT tablet needs to build a convincing catalogue of apps, while for the Windows 8 tablet, Microsoft needs to make sure that older applications are updated to run well on newer touch-driven software. Windows 7 tablets faced that same usability gulf when running pre-existing software, and the results often weren't pretty.

Price

That consumer-targeted Windows RT Surface tablet needs to be affordable and cheaper than an iPad, or for the same price, if that can be accomplished. The Windows 8 Surface tablet has two challenges: competition with the iPad, and with ultrabooks. Many Windows ultrabooks cost as little as US$799. Can the Surface compete at a reasonable price?

OS: doing it all vs. doing some things well

Apple's iPads run iOS, while MacBooks run OS X, and the two approach each other without meeting or sharing apps. The disadvantage is that an iPad can't be a true Mac replacement. Windows 8 tablets are full-fledged computers capable of running both tablet apps and full computer applications. It remains to be seen whether Microsoft is ahead of the game or muddying the waters. Meanwhile, the Surface RT only runs apps, like the iPad.

Consumer/pro split

Apple has been successful at making one line of iPads, with the only differences being 4G and storage. Microsoft's twin set of tablets ? one with beefier specs and full Windows compatibility, the other more like an iPad ? could fracture the decision-making process. Apple has MacBook Pros at higher prices and with more capabilities, but all MacBooks run the same type of OS; they don't split it like the Surface does.

What about ultrabooks?

How do these tablets relate to the recent run of ever-improving Windows ultrabooks, especially when Microsoft is selling the Surface as a "PC that's also a tablet"? Is there a coming showdown, or can Windows PCs support a myriad of new forms at once? The iPad coexists with the MacBook Air, but neither currently claims it's doing the job of the other.

The screen

The RT and Windows 8 Surface tablets shown off yesterday look like they'll have different resolutions: one 720p, the other 1080p. The third-generation iPad has a far crisper Retina display, although the iPad 2 still has a 720p screen. How long will it be before Microsoft tries an ultra high-res screen on the Surface, and what will it cost?

Will it be fun?

OK, I said seven, but here's an eighth to consider: will it be fun? The iPad has earned a place in homes because of how easy and fun it is to use. Microsoft hasn't often been thought of as a "fun" company, although it's had great success with the Xbox 360 Pro and Kinect. Microsoft needs to harness some of that magic for the Surface, or be patient enough to find a way to get it into the Surface soon enough.

Prismatic Opens Its News Discovery Service To Everyone, Adds Facebook And Google Reader Sign-Ups

prismatic logoPrismatic has been in invite-only mode for more than a year, but co-founder and CEO Bradford Cross says that changes today. When I met with Cross earlier this year, he said he chose that approach because he was trying to do something genuinely different ? not just bolt social discovery onto existing products, which usually means presenting stuff that was already in your Twitter feed, but really use social and interest data to recommend content that you wouldn't have seen otherwise.

Nicki Minaj Recruits 2 Chainz For Her Pink Friday Tour

2 Chainz, who is currently touring with Drake, will join the Young Money queen for the North American leg starting in July.

When 2 Chainz and YMCMB hook up, good things are bound to happen. With only two more dates left on Drake's Club Paradise run, it was announced on Tuesday (June 19) that Drizzy's tourmate, 2 Chainz, will be joining Nicki Minaj on the North American leg of her Pink Friday Tour.

The two first hooked up on Nicki's "Beez in the Trap" single earlier this year, but their relationship actually dates back to around 2008, when the both were on the road with Lil Wayne. "I've known Nicki for a minute; I met her on the I Am Music Tour, the first leg with Wayne," 2 Chainz told MTV News in April. "It was cool, we had a great relationship, we used to talk, trip out here and there."

"He's an amazing dude, very hard worker," Nicki told us in April.

Their camaraderie was evident in the "Beez in the Trap" video as Minaj shared a dance with the Atlanta MC. Nicki has been known to give lap dances to guests during her shows, so don't be surprised if she and Tity Boi share a special moment or two when they hit the road in Chicago on July 16.

The news comes a day after 2 Chainz and Drake dropped their video for "No Lie." The rising single is the first off his upcoming solo debut Based on a T.R.U. Story, which is slated to drop on August 14, two days after he and Nicki wrap up their last scheduled date in Vancouver, B.C.

Are you planning to catch Nicki Minaj and 2 Chainz on tour this summer? Let us know in the comments!

Americans' preferences for outdoor recreation changing

The USDA Forest Service Southern Research Station (SRS) recently published a national study, Outdoor Recreation Trends and Futures, showing that Americans' current choices for outdoor recreation differ noticeably from those made by previous generations of Americans.

Participation in "traditional" activities such as hunting and fishing has flattened or declined while participation in activities that involve viewing and photographing nature is growing. Because of the continued importance of public lands for outdoor recreation, study findings have direct implications for how these lands are managed in the future.

"Our research shows that not only are more Americans participating in outdoor recreation, the number of times they participated in many of the outdoor activities surveyed has grown," said author and lead researcher Ken Cordell, SRS pioneering scientist and one of the foremost authorities on recreational trends in the United States.

Cordell prepared the report as part of the 2010 Resources Planning Act (RPA) Assessment. The Forest and Rangeland RPA of 1974 mandates a periodic assessment of the conditions and trends related to the Nation's renewable resources. Outdoor Recreation Trends and Futures provides an extensive and detailed overview of outdoor recreation participation, regional variation in participation, and differences in participation by demographic groups. The report emphasizes nature-based outdoor recreation and the natural amenities driving these activities.

"Trends in nature-based and other outdoor recreation have far-reaching implications, especially for how we manage public lands," said Cordell. "This report offers the only public agency-sponsored long range forecasting of recreation demand for the United States."

The study showed a discernible growth in nature-based activitiesthose defined as taking place in natural settings or involving directly some element of nature from 2000 to 2009. Among types of nature-based recreation, motorized off-road and snow activities grew until about 2005, but ended the decade at about the same level as 2000. The trend in hunting, fishing, and backcountry activities remained relatively flat and various forms of skiing, including snowboarding, declined during this period. The clear growth area was within the overall group of activities oriented towards viewing and photographing nature.

In addition to describing trends in outdoor recreation in the United States, the report provides descriptions of outdoor recreation activities on public and private lands, with projections of participation out to 2060.

"The study shows that public lands continue to be highly important for the recreational opportunities they offer, with again, a growth in nature-based recreation, especially viewing, photographing, or otherwise appreciating nature," said Cordell. "Continuous assessment and adaptions to the management of public lands is essential as changes emerge in the future. Orienting overnight and day-use sites on public lands to emphasize nature viewing, photography and study would seem to be an appropriate strategy."

The report includes invited papers from a wide range of recreation and social scientists that add context to tables and figures by focusing on specific issues and perspectives on: trends in wildlife-related recreation; recreation patterns across demographic, region-of-country, and natural setting strata; youth time and activities outdoors, and recreational use of public and private properties.

'Girls' Finale: Happily Ever After?

As the HBO series' first season comes to an end, we reflect on the girls' evolution.
By Amy Wilkinson

Lena Dunham in "Girls"
Photo:

One of our first glimpses of aspiring writer Hannah Horvath, the plucky protagonist of HBO's freshman series "Girls," was as she soaked in the bath, noshing on a cupcake as best friend and roommate Marnie shaved her legs and bemoaned her lackluster relationship with boyfriend Charlie. So it seems only fitting that our last look at Hannah during Sunday's season finale also involved a baked good and a body of water. But this time it was a solitary Hannah sitting on a Coney Island beach, finishing off a piece of tin-foil-wrapped wedding cake as she contemplated, well, what exactly, we don't know.

It was a season of highs and lows for each of the four females on "Girls," as a litany of breakups, make-ups, sexually-transmitted-disease diagnoses and employment snafus culminated in one girl's wedding, one girl's first time and one girl's heartbreak. Let's take a look at each character's evolution during season one.

Hannah
My chief complaint with Lena Dunham's Hannah as the series began was her incredible sense of entitlement: Her parents had been supporting her for the better part of two years as she toiled at an unpaid internship, and she expected nothing less from them. "I'm your only child, it's not like I'm draining your resources!" she huffed when mom and dad finally disavowed any financial responsibility for her. Yet it looked as though Hannah might redeem herself, landing a full-time gig after at least one incredibly awkward job interview (rape is never a work-appropriate topic of conversation, kids!). But it didn't last long as her boss was the grab-happy sort, and Hannah left, unsuccessfully trying to blackmail him for a sweet severance package on her way out. All of which left her Marnie's financial dependent — a status that ultimately ended their roommate relationship.

Hannah also struggled with relationships of the romantic variety, namely with wood-working actor Adam, who finally agreed to be her boyfriend. But Hannah got scared and messed that up, too.

For all intents and purposes, it seems our heroine grew the least of all the girls. But perhaps it's for the best, as there wouldn't be much of a show left if she had everything figured out.

Marnie
Marnie, too, grappled with unsuccessful relationships this season, though it may have been the one with herself that needed the most help. Marnie, played by Allison Williams, began the season with a long-term boyfriend whom she couldn't stand. "His touch now feels like a weird uncle putting his hand on my leg at Thanksgiving," she told Hannah. Charlie learned of Marnie's feelings the hard way, when the contents of Hannah's diary, in which she mused over the pair's dysfunctional relationship, became public knowledge. Thus, the two were done. Then they weren't. Then they were again. And as much as Marnie had outgrown Charlie, it didn't make their breakup any easier when he fell right back into a relationship only a couple weeks later.

Something changed in Marnie, and she decided to live her life more freely, which apparently meant making out with Jessa and engaging in almost-threesomes. She also finally came to terms with how much of a mooch (both emotionally and financially) Hannah had become and moved out of their apartment and, temporarily, into Shoshanna's. Having no plans would be good for her, she said. Marnie's newfound whimsy even inspired her to make out with guest star Bobby Moynihan.

Jessa
Then there's free spirit Jessa, played by Jemima Kirke. She blew into town at the series' onset, seemingly just stopping over until her next adventure pearl-shucking or climbing the Himalayas or meditating at an ashram. But she moved in with cousin Shoshanna and started a life for herself, taking a job babysitting two precocious Manhattan tykes — a situation that quickly got messy when the father made a pass at her during the most epic Bushwick warehouse party of the year. His impressively calm wife later asked Jessa to come back to the children, all the while knowing very well she couldn't. But her maternal instincts didn't flag, and she gave Jessa a piece of parting advice: "You're getting into dramas to distract from who you want to be."

The wisdom apparently cut Jessa deep, because as we saw during Sunday night's finale, she decided who she wanted to be, and that was a wife.

In a surprise ceremony, she wed Thomas-John, the guy who thought he was going to have a three-way with Jessa and Marnie. Will the spur-of-the-moment marriage last? We'll have to wait for season two to find out.

Shoshanna
Finally, lest we forget, is Shoshanna, the most underutilized yet arguably most interesting character on "Girls." Unfortunately, her entire plot arc revolved around losing her virginity — something she finally did during "She Did." She'd come close before with a former fellow camper, but he didn't want the responsibility of taking her V-card, even if she was "the least virginy virgin ever." In the end, it was her crack spiritual guide Ray who was her first, and we can only hope he didn't get in her emotional way. If there's one thing season two could use more of, it's the wonderfully adept Zosia Mamet.
