Hollie is less than 'Perfect' on 'American Idol'

By Craig Berman, TODAY.com contributor

Michael Becker / FOX

Hollie Cavanagh performed "Perfect" on Wednesday, and while it was better than last week, she was still the least successful this round.

On a night where the ?American Idol? judges were again inclined to be kind, the trio of Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler sent a message to the audience at home: ?Do we really need to bring Hollie Cavanagh back next week??

First of all, kudos to ?Idol? for making it easy for the contestants to succeed this week. The theme was songs from the current decade, so everyone sang something that had been released in the past three years. It sure beats hearing them take on songs from a generation or two ago and try to make them relevant.

Hollie was looking to send a message by choosing to perform Pink's "Perfect," and while she may never feel like she?s less than perfect, the reaction from the judges was tepid at best. J.Lo told her she sang beautifully but ?we'll see how it all pans out,? which is hardly a ringing endorsement. And she was the most positive of the three.

It was revealing when host Ryan Seacrest asked Hollie what she was thinking just before taking the stage, and she replied, ?Don?t mess up.? Like many a teenager before her, the criticism she?s gotten has totally messed with her head, and she looks like she?s overthinking every note. On a night when most of the performances were top notch, hers stood out as the one that didn?t belong.

The rest of the bottom three is tougher to predict. Skylar Laine may be in trouble because she opened the show, but ?Didn't You Know How Much I Loved You? by Kellie Pickler was a good illustration of the type of song she could take to the top of the charts right now, which the judges all noted. Particularly in the short term, Skylar would be one of the easiest of the finalists to get onto the radio and sell records, which has to help her chances.

Elise Testone may be in the bottom three again because she usually is. She likewise won raves closing the show with Lady Gaga?s ?You and I,? but the idea was better than the execution, and it'll be interesting to see what everyone has to say about it on Thursday. However, Elise's endorsement from Jason Segel won?t hurt, and we're sure he appreciated the plug for his film ?Jeff, Who Lives at Home.? If anyone wondered what the "Idol" hopefuls do on their rare days off, apparently "seeing comedies" is a popular choice.

The other woman remaining, Jessica Sanchez, is in no danger. On the off chance that the audience didn?t get what she was trying to do with Jazmine Sullivan?s ?Stuttering,? the judges will surely save her.

Kudos also go to Jimmy Iovine for his attempts to create a rivalry among the guys, telling both Colton Dixon and Phillip Phillips that they were competing against each other and the other was winning. Were this seventh-grade gym class, that would probably have had a better shot at success, but it was worth the attempt.

Also kudos to both Jimmy and the judges for trying to browbeat Phillip into taking some chances, or at least give an indication that he cares about winning. When Phillip is actually singing, he looks like a professional, but when he?s not, he?s so laid back he makes Jason Castro look intense. (Shout-out to those who watched season seven!)

Colton, meanwhile, did fine but lost the chance for a true show-stopping moment. He covered the Skylar Grey version of ?Love the Way You Lie,? but who wouldn?t have jumped out of their seats had he broken character and started rapping the Eminem lyrics from his duet with Rihanna? It would have been completely over the top and ridiculous ... and probably would have won him votes. But certainly it would've been better than the ?We?re not dating, and nobody really cares anyway? thing he has going with Skylar.

But Joshua Ledet may have been the big mover of the night, in part by being unpredictable. Who would have though he?d sing something by Bruno Mars? Nobody. He was very good with ?Runaway Baby,? perhaps inspired by the pre-performance birthday greetings from season three winner Fantasia Barrino.

Criticize ?Idol? all you want, but nobody does a better job at bringing back former cast members. And if you don't believe that, tune in Thursday to see both Jennifer Hudson and James Durbin take the stage before somebody (likely Hollie) gets sent packing.

Who do you think will be in the bottom three? Share your prediction on our Facebook page!

Sprint's HTC EVO 4G LTE zips into the FCC, zips back out again

Image
HTC's EVO 4G LTE swung down on a rope of white mercy and straight into the FCC's cold and dark underground bunker. Given that the device is exclusive to Sprint, it's no surprise to see that it'll slurp down LTE from the network's Band 25. There's also the usual selection of CDMA 2000, 802.11 a/b/g/n WiFi and Bluetooth radios we'd expect from a smartphone in this day and age. Now that the Government's given its blessing, everything's on track for that pre-sale to begin on May 7th, with the device expected to arrive in your paws soon afterward.

Blind author's lost pages recovered by CSI

By Alastair Jamieson, msnbc.com

LONDON -- A blind British writer failed to notice her pen had run out of ink while writing 26 pages of?a book, but her lost words were recovered by police forensic staff.

Trish Vickers, who took up writing after losing her sight, uses pen and paper and is helped by a volunteer who comes by to type up her manuscripts.

Her son, Simon, also reads her work back to her during his regular visits to her home in Dorset, England.

It was during one of his visits that he discovered she had written 26 pages, but there was nothing on the paper, according to the Bridport and Lyme Regis News which first reported the story.

?We battled with various ideas until we thought of the police. We rang them and asked to speak to their fingerprint section. They said if there was anything they could do they would be happy to help. I was gobsmacked and so happy," Vickers, 59, told reporter Rene Gerryts.

Her son drove her to the county police headquarters, whose officers worked in their spare time to recreate the missing words from her manuscript.

?I think they used a combination of various lights at different angles to see if they could get the impression made by my pen. I am so happy, pleased and grateful. It was really nice of them and I want to thank them for helping me out," Vickers said.

Dorset Police were unavailable for comment.

Carly Rae Jepsen, Justin Bieber Have 'Friendly Competition'

'Call Me Maybe' singer calls newfound success 'the greatest surprise.'
By Christina Garibaldi

<P>Just a few months ago, few had heard of Canadian singer Carly Rae Jepsen, but with the success of her first single, "Call Me Maybe," the 26-year-old is quickly becoming a household name. Earlier this week, that infectious song became the fastest-selling U.K. single in 2012 so far &#8212; yet, what's even more impressive is who she beat out for the #1 spot: her boss, Justin Bieber. </P><P> </P><P>Bieber, who signed the YouTube star to his Schoolboy Records, took to Twitter to send his congratulations. "So i get up today and #BOYFRIEND is #2 on ITUNES chart in the UK!! Incredible!" Bieber tweeted. "Who is #1?? My own artist @carlyraejepsen ... hmmmm." </P><P> </P><P> </P><P> </P><P>When she stopped by the MTV News offices Monday, Jepsen insisted the only place these two are battling it out is on the charts. "The fact that we are able to have that friendly competition is blowing my mind," she shared. "I wouldn't be here without his support and his help, and he is so great about it. He's just happy for me, which is nice to see." </P><P> </P><P>So, is she going to give up that #1 spot? "We can share it: two #1s!" Jepsen joked, laughing. </P><P> </P><P>The pair might actually share the #1 spot in the future, since Jepsen confirmed she and Bieber recorded a duet. But for now, Jepsen is still trying to adjust to the fact that her life has changed so dramatically in just the past few months. </P><P> </P><P>"It truly has been a whirlwind, but it's been a lot of fun," she said. "It's just like my entire life changed, and it's exciting. If you met me before this experience, I would have said my favorite thing about life is when it surprises you. This has been the greatest surprise so far." </P><P> </P><P>Jepsen revealed that a lack of sleep has been the biggest adjustment for her since finding fame, but it's the time away from her family that she misses the most. </P><P> </P><P>"That's the one downer, because it's hard not to feel grateful about everything that's happening," she said. "But I would say that's the one hard part, just kind of keeping in touch with everyone. And they're all so excited, but the most they see me is on TV. We're trying to make a once-a-week little date, phone date, chat, we'll have tea somewhere and talk; it's nice." </P><P> </P><P>Her success isn't just working out for her: It seems her brother is also reaping benefits: "Everyone in my family is handling it in a different way, and all very positively," she shared. "My brother is using it as a pickup line ... It's kind of awkward." </P><P> </P><P><i>Are you a fan of Carly Rae Jepsen? Tell us below!</i> </P><P> </P><P><center></center></p>

PSA: Sony SmartWatch now available in the US for $150

What's the most useful smartwatch of them all? If you guessed Sony's, you've got reason to smile: we just got word that it's finally available here in the US of A. As expected, the SmartWatch costs $150, while those colorful (read: not black) wrist bands are priced at $20 a pop. To recap, the watch pairs with Android phones over Bluetooth, using a free app available in Google Play (if you happen to own a Sony handset, you should find that application pre-installed). Like any smartwatch worth its salt, this one lets you read emails, texts and social updates on the device. Meanwhile, the list of mini apps is approaching 60, as of this writing, and already includes biggies like Facebook and Google Maps.

After getting hands-on not once but twice, we can say the rubber strap is comfortable and the 1.3-inch OLED display responsive, though the apps are a mixed bag in terms of usefulness. Tap-to-like on Facebook? Genius. A remote for your phone's camera? Unabashed gimmickry, if you ask us. Using the watch to call someone in your contacts list? You'll need a Bluetooth headset for that feature to be truly handy. Other favorites of ours include the ability to find your lost phone (even if it's set to quiet mode), as well as stream photos and other media from your phone. You can even respond to incoming text messages with a preset reply (e.g., "I'm busy. What's up?"), though good luck using that canned response a second time when your friend gets back to you 10 seconds later. In any case, is all that worth the $150? That's a conversation you best have with your wallet -- in read-only format, naturally.

Top Posts for Relocation Resources When Moving to Washington ...

Continuing our ?Best of? Series, we have posted below links to some of our most useful relocation resources for clients. Even the most seasoned mover usually has the same same concerns and surprises when arriving in the DC metro area:

Commuting - DC is forever making ?Worst Traffic? lists. You can NOT assume that 1 mile = 1 minute for commute times around here. Triple that ratio is a more accurate assessment.? We do, however, have an extensive, if crowded public transit system including metro (subway), bus lines, MARC and VRE trains, and soon, lightrails. Before choosing a neighborhood, log on to a mapping site like this one that will show you the traffic cameras along your route (be sure to check it during what you expect would be your normal commuting hours).? And of course, a dry run of your commute will teach you quickly what to expect.

Schools ? Agents are somewhat limited in the questions we can answer about schools; We can?t for example, answer qualitative questions like ?Is this a ?good? school?? A great resource, however, is GreatSchools.org. Our area in general is fortunate to have many Newsweek-ranked ?Best High Schools in America.?

Renting vs Buying ? The toughest decision is whether to rent or buy. A good rule of thumb is that if you plan to be in the area less than 3 years, the closing costs on the purchase and sale will make it difficult to break even on a purchase (depending on your tax bracket, since a large chunk of home ownership costs are tax deductible, while rent is not).? So a better way to think about this question is actually ?How long do I need to stay in this property to break even??? One of the best rental calculators out there is this one from the New York Times, which answers that ?How long?? question nicely.

Prices ? One thing you can count on is sticker shock. Start your search early by looking online to see what places go for in different neighborhoods (keeping in mind the commute time discussed above.) If you?re searching for rentals, check out our page here. Or, if you?re ready to start looking for a place to buy, you can use our search tool here (our search tool has all brokers? listings, not just our own).

If you need help with your move to the Greater Capital Area, we?d love to help you.? Just contact us by clicking here.??
